Kelli Ovies advises clients on trademark and copyright matters. She regularly prepares U.S. trademark and copyright registration applications, conducts and reviews trademark clearance searches, works with counsel in other jurisdictions on foreign trademark filings, and assists clients with intellectual property disputes.

In her practice before the United States Patent and Trademark Office, she drafts responses to Office Actions, prepares filings necessary to maintain registrations, and initiates and defends Trademark Trial and Appeal Board proceedings.

Kelli came to the Forrest Firm after spending nearly 12 years on the intellectual property and commercial litigation teams at Smith, Anderson, Blount, Dorsett, Mitchell & Jernigan. At Smith Anderson, her work spanned trademark and copyright registration and intellectual property infringement matters, as well as litigation involving claims including breach of contract, unfair and deceptive trade practices, and Superfund cost recovery and contribution.

In 2010, Kelli helped a client obtain a $37 million judgment at trial in a commercial contract case, one of the largest jury verdicts in North Carolina history. The judgment was affirmed unanimously by the Court of Appeals in August 2012.
