Attorney Kelli Ovies advises entrepreneurs and executives on intellectual property matters at every stage of the business life cycle. She counsels clients to help them identify, evaluate, and address intellectual property risks and opportunities.
Kelli came to the Forrest Firm after spending nearly 12 years on the intellectual property and commercial litigation teams at Smith, Anderson, Blount, Dorsett, Mitchell & Jernigan. At Smith Anderson, Ms. Ovies prosecuted trademark registration applications before the United States Patent and Trademark Office. In addition, she initiated and defended Trademark Trial and Appeal Board proceedings for clients.
Her work also spanned copyright registration and intellectual property infringement matters, as well as litigation involving claims including breach of contract, unfair and deceptive trade practices, and Superfund cost recovery and contribution. In 2010, Kelli helped a client obtain a $37 million judgment at trial in a commercial contract case, one of the largest jury verdicts in North Carolina history. The judgment was affirmed unanimously by the Court of Appeals in August 2012.
Kelli Ovies earned her law degree in 2006 from Duke University School of Law, where she served as executive editor of Law & Contemporary Problems. In 2000, Ms. Ovies graduated with highest honors from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where she majored in journalism and mass communication and German.
Ms. Ovies is licensed to practice law in the state of North Carolina, where she is a member of the North Carolina Bar Association.
