Houston Barnes works with clients in areas related to growing successful, sustainable companies. His practice areas include securities and fundraising, commercial real estate, litigation, intellectual property, and corporate formation for startups.
Houston joined the Forrest Firm in an of counsel role. He is the founder of Barnes Law Firm in Raleigh, where he has advised multiple entrepreneurs, executives, and investors on a variety of legal and strategic matters.
Throughout his professional career, Houston has developed a diverse skill set from serving as both in-house and external counsel to multiple corporations, as well as his time as a government relations and public policy specialist. An experienced entrepreneur, Mr. Barnes has operated the Barnes Law Firm and his public policy consulting business since 2011.
From 2007-2011, Houston served on the executive leadership team of Chesson Laboratory Associates in Raleigh. During his time at Chesson, Houston worked with a team to raise $4.5 million in equity financing and led negotiation and implementation of multi-million dollar partnerships.
A trusted advisor to many Triangle-area executives, Houston has worked on multiple for-profit and non-profit boards of directors, including the 14th Judicial District Bar (Durham Bar Association), Durham SciNergy, and the Pay It Forward Fertility Foundation. He has served as an advisor, coach, and mentor to the Cherokee Challenge, the Council for Entrepreneurial Development, Launch the Venture (an initiative of the UNC Kenan-Flagler Business School), and the Morrisville Innovation Foundation. Houston is also a former executive-in-residence for the HiTEC program at NC State University’s College of Management.
