Forrest Firm Sponsors NCCU Ignite Case Competition
February 18, 2019
Next weekend, one lucky group of bright undergraduate students will receive a potentially life-changing opportunity: to impress industry professionals and gain real-world experience in a two-day case competition and hackathon.
The North Carolina Central University Ignite Case Competition, sponsored by the Forrest Firm and its client, SpokeHub, will begin at 3pm. on Friday, February 22, ending at 4pm Sunday. It will be held at North Carolina Central University’s School of Education in Durham.
Participating students must solve a variety of complex problems that require business and technical solutions. NCCU Ignite is a student-led, interdisciplinary competition, allowing students with different skill sets to combine their knowledge in a range of business- and technology- related areas. Problems are designed to test their innovation, creativity, and ability to perform under pressure. Free meals will be provided to all, and special prizes will be awarded to the top three winning teams.
NCCU Ignite presents a strong networking opportunity for these undergraduate students. In addition to the contest, participants will be introduced to industry professionals, organizers, and like-minded undergraduates. After the event, a list of registrants will be provided so that students can scout and follow up with new contacts.
“In organizing NCCU Ignite, my goal was to combat the idea that innovative ideas could not come out of historically black colleges and universities,” said Lyndon Bowen, a senior at NCCU. “I have been blown away by the amount of support from the entrepreneurial community, students and universities in uniting around this idea. We often think of the Stanfords and the Silicon Valleys of the world as the de facto leaders in terms of innovation. While we all acknowledge their prowess, I expect this event to ultimately display that we all have the power to innovate and create!”
“Many college students consider becoming entrepreneurs, but need a window of opportunity to get started,” said David Morris, managing attorney for the firm’s Durham office. “Events like this help young entrepreneurs get a foot in the door by connecting them to people within the industry. And, for those students who haven’t even thought about creating their own startup, having this engaging experience can really light that entrepreneurial fire.”
“We can’t underestimate college students – after all, undergrads have created some of the most successful startups of all time,” said Morris. “Instead, we have to invest in them. That’s what Forrest Firm aims to do with this event, and I think it’s a fantastic way to fulfill our mission as a B Corp.”
