The Forrest Firm is pleased to be a part of the Durham Chamber of Commerce’s entrepreneurial initiative, the Smoffice.

Part of a national campaign in support of entrepreneurship, Durham’s Smoffice is the result of a collaboration between the Greater Durham Chamber of Commerce and Downtown Durham, Inc. These two critical economic development organizations recently joined forces to run Durham’s first two Bull City Startup Stampedes to assist Durham-area entrepreneurs with office space and advisory services from Triangle area providers.

James Forrest, principal and founder of the Forrest Firm, is currently serving in his second term on the Durham Chamber’s Board of Directors.  “We are very proud, once again, to be a part of doing something special for the community of entrepreneurs that call Durham home,” stated Forrest. “Durham is a special place, for many reasons. We’re special because we’re the home to so many bright, creative people with great ideas for new products and services, and we’re also special because there’s a sincere community of established businesspeople ready to help them get started and sustain their businesses.”

The Smoffice will provide one startup six months of free space in “The World’s Smallest Office,” as well as a free six-month lease on a condominium in downtown Durham’s Magnum 506.  Located in the storefront window of Main Street’s Beyu Caffe, the Smoffice was designed by Center Studio Architecture constructed by McDonald York.

Applications for The Smoffice opened on February 29 and will close Friday, March 30. Interested applicants can learn more at or on Twitter @thesmoffice. Applications should include a one page business plan along with a 60-second You Tube video detailing why the startup should win The Smoffice space. The Smoffice winner will be announced on Friday, April 13 and the winner will arrive in Durham and open The Smoffice on Monday, April 30.

The winning entrepreneur will enjoy a custom built desk as well as free furniture and a tablet computer. The Smoffice winner will also receive technical assistance from startup experts in business law, accounting, and marketing, as did previous winners of the Bull City Startup Stampedes.  Perhaps most important among the prizes, the winner will be networked with the 70 other startups that call downtown Durham home.
