DURHAM’S AMERICAN UNDERGROUND SELECTED FOR GOOGLE ENTREPRENEURS HUB
October 1, 2013
By James Forrest
In yet another victory for the Durham, North Carolina business community, economic development leaders at the city’s American Underground have landed an important new infrastructure gain for the Bull City, selection to join the Google Entrepreneurs Tech Hub Network.
The tech giant selected American cities Durham, Chicago, Denver, Detroit, Minneapolis, and Nashville, along with the Canadian city of Waterloo, Ontario for the project, a way for Google to join economic development efforts to support startup businesses in these key cities across North America.
The program will create a nationwide network of entrepreneurs who will benefit from Google’s vast technology resources. Participating companies in these critical, developing markets will receive multiple benefits from Google, including developer seminars, software discounts, and early access to new products in development.
American Underground, led by former Durham Chamber economic development strategist Adam Klein, is one of the area’s true, sustained success stories in defining Durham as a leader in nurturing startup businesses across multiple sectors. The Underground, first launched at the American Tobacco Campus and now spreading to Durham’s Main Street corridor and Raleigh’s Fayetteville Street corridor, provides collaborative workspace opportunities for startups and businesses geared to serve young companies.
Forrest Firm client Smashing Boxes, led by Nick Jordan, is a developer of applications for Android, iOS, and Ruby on Rails, We have witnessed first-hand how this company has benefited from tenancy at the original American Underground location at the ATC, as they are surrounded by talented individuals and teams from a variety of tech companies and service firms geared to suit the needs of early-stage companies.
Since its founding, the Forrest Firm has been committed to serving Durham’s startup community, through our collaborative efforts with the Durham Chamber, the Startup Stampede, the Smoffice, and a host of client companies blessed with immense intellectual capital. From our work with the Chamber, we know the determination and dedication of people like Adam Klein and the leadership at American Underground and other organizations like Downtown Durham, Inc., people who are truly “all-in” for uplifting the entire Durham business community.
We offer our sincere congratulations to everyone at the American Underground for landing this opportunity that will benefit entrepreneurs in the area.
