April 2, 2018
Now in its eighth year of operation, the Forrest Firm is a provider of corporate legal services to businesses, non-profits, entrepreneurs, and individuals. Core practice areas include corporate transactions, financings and capital raises, commercial real estate, employment law, regulatory, mergers and acquisitions, estate planning and administration, and litigation.
In his new role at the firm, Mr. Burns will assist clients with dispute resolution, arbitration, litigation, and appeals, with insights and perspectives gained from over 20 years as a practicing attorney in North Carolina.
Mr. Burns frequently serves clients in the financial services industry and has represented companies in corporate contract and tort disputes, loan workouts, commercial foreclosures and collections, and construction contracting disputes. He has also represented clients in bankruptcy proceedings across North Carolina and in Delaware.
Mr. Burns began his legal career in 1999 at the High Point firm of Wyatt Early Harris Wheeler LLP, building his initial practice in civil litigation. In 2001, he moved to the Raleigh office of Hunton & Williams, where he spent over eight years working in the areas of civil litigation, bankruptcy, financial services litigation, general commercial contract litigation and corporate torts. In 2009, Mr. Burns joined the Raleigh office of Williams Mullen. During his time at Williams Mullen, he enhanced his practice with experience in international arbitration, as well as a focus on the renewable power industry.
Mr. Burns graduated with a bachelor of arts degree in political science in 1992 from Davidson College. He studied for a year at McGill University Faculty of Law in Montreal, Canada on a Rotary Ambassadorial Scholarship and in 1997 earned a juris doctor degree from the Wake Forest University School of Law in Winston-Salem. From 1997-1999, John served as a law clerk for Senior U. S. District Judge Earl Britt in Raleigh.
Mr. Burns is a member of the Wake County Bar Association, the North Carolina Bar Association and the American Bar Association. In 2014, Mr. Burns was elected to serve as a Wake County Commissioner, and currently represents District 7.
“We are thrilled to have John Burns join the Forrest Firm,” said firm founder James Forrest. “He brings tremendous litigation experience, with two decades trying cases at state and federal levels and in arbitration. He will bring that experience to resolving disputes for our growing roster of clients, and his commitment to public service and volunteerism makes him a natural fit at Forrest Firm. We are looking forward to seeing John continue to grow his litigation practice, as well as his pursuit of emerging areas like renewable energy.”
