The Forrest Firm is a provider of legal services to businesses, non-profits, entrepreneurs, and individuals. Core practice areas include corporate transactions, financings and capital raises, commercial real estate, intellectual property, employment law, banking and financial services, mergers and acquisitions, estate planning and administration, and litigation.
In her practice at the Forrest Firm, Ashley Johnson focuses her practice on patent and trademark prosecution before the United States Patent and Trademark Office and in foreign countries. She is experienced with the patent appeals process, having successfully argued for reversal of Examiner rejections with the Patent and Trial Appeal Board and in foreign patent and trademark matters in Europe, China, Canada, and other foreign jurisdictions.
In her of counsel role at the Forrest Firm, Ashley helps clients build their patent and trademark portfolio by preparing, filing, and prosecuting chemical, biomedical, medical device, and mechanical patent applications. In addition, she renders patentability, validity, and freedom-to-operate opinions and counsels clients on a variety of intellectual property issues.
Before obtaining her law degree, Ashley worked in biochemical research in both the pharmaceutical industry and at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Previously, she served for eight years as in-house intellectual property counsel, working as both patent attorney and a trademark lawyer, at a major packaging corporation in South Carolina, with a focus on medical devices and related product innovations. While in-house, Ashley managed a global portfolio of more than 300 trademarks. She also has extensive experience in private practice and brings a very pragmatic approach to client engagement.
Ashley Johnson holds a bachelor of arts degree in chemistry, as well as bachelor of science and master of science degrees in biochemistry from North Carolina State University. She earned a juris doctor degree from Campbell University’s Norman Adrian Wiggins School of Law.
“We are excited to have Ashley Johnson join our expanding intellectual property team at the Forrest Firm,” said attorney Lyle Gravatt, who leads the firm’s intellectual property practice group. “She has seen the trademark and patent needs of the life sciences industry from practically every perspective, and she brings great strategies and insights to biotech and medical device clients from her time as in-house counsel and a number of years in private practice. Our clients will enjoy working with Ashley as they look to grow and protect their IP portfolios.”
