Now in its eighth year of operation, the Forrest Firm is a provider of legal services to businesses, non-profits, entrepreneurs, and individuals. Core practice areas include corporate transactions, financings and capital raises, commercial real estate, employment law, banking and financial services, mergers and acquisitions, estate planning and administration, and litigation.
In her of counsel role at the firm, Ms. Bateman focuses her legal practice on matters related to employment law. Her approach to employment matters seeks to build teams and optimize results at the intersection of management, human resources, and the law.
From 1987 to 2013, Ms. Bateman worked at the North Carolina’s Department of Justice, spending nearly 10 years as an assistant attorney general, followed by a 16-year stint as a special deputy attorney general. During her time at the DOJ, she focused her work on representing many different agencies and universities, primarily in employment-related matters, but also in general litigation and regulatory matters.
In 2013, Ms. Bateman joined the North Carolina Office of State Human Resources as general counsel, where she helped to significantly revise the appeals process for State employees. Since 2015, she served as assistant general counsel to the North Carolina Department of Public Safety, an agency with 30,000 employees and a $3 billion budget. During her work as assistant general counsel, she focused almost exclusively on employment matters and reduced annual expenditures related to back pay and attorney’s fees by more than 90 percent, from over a million dollars to less than one hundred thousand dollars in the first full year she was there.
Valerie Bateman earned her bachelor of arts in political science and economics (1983) and juris doctor (1986) degrees from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
Ms. Bateman is licensed to practice law in the state of North Carolina, where she is a member of the North Carolina Bar, and is admitted to practice in all three federal district courts in North Carolina and the Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit.
“Valerie Bateman is a valuable addition to our employment law team at the Forrest Firm,” said Leslie Lasher, an employment lawyer with the firm. “Her deep public sector experience has given her exposure to diverse legal challenges and risk management approaches. Our clients will greatly benefit from her experience and approach.”
